A recent breakfast meeting between former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the immediate past Governor of Osun State, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, has sent ripples through Nigeria’s political landscape, igniting fresh speculation about potential alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The private gathering, held at Aregbesola’s residence, was disclosed by Atiku Abubakar himself, adding to the growing narrative of political figures from various parties engaging in consultations. While details of their discussion remain under wraps, the meeting has already become a talking point among political observers, particularly in the context of recent calls for opposition unity.
Both Atiku Abubakar, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate in the last two general elections, and Rauf Aregbesola, who recently exited the All Progressives Congress (APC) under controversial circumstances, are key players with significant political weight. Aregbesola, a former Minister of Interior, has been reported to be aligning with a “novel political platform” after his group, the Omoluabi Progressives, resolved to leave the APC.
This development comes amidst ongoing discussions about a potential coalition of opposition parties to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. Atiku Abubakar has been vocal about the need for opposition unity, even meeting with other key figures like Peter Obi of the Labour Party and former Senate President Bukola Saraki. However, it’s worth noting that both Atiku and Obi have denied striking any joint ticket deal for 2027, even as discussions about a broader coalition continue.
The PDP Governors’ Forum has also weighed in, ruling out any merger with other opposition parties, though they stated the PDP would welcome any party or group willing to join them to “wrestle power and enthrone good leadership for 2027.” This indicates a complex and fluid political environment where various approaches to alliance building are being explored.
The meeting between Atiku and Aregbesola, therefore, adds another layer to this intricate web of political realignments. Whether this signifies a concrete move towards a broader opposition front, or simply a strategic consultation between influential politicians, remains to be seen. However, it undeniably fuels the narrative of a dynamic political chess game unfolding as the 2027 elections draw closer.
