UMUAHIA – Two years after the lifeless body of Air Force cadet Emmanuel Onyeomereneche was pulled from a hotel swimming pool, his family has lashed out at the Nigerian Military and Police, accusing them of a “deliberate cover-up” despite forensic evidence ruling the death a homicide.
The grieving father, Ephraim Onyeomereneche, spoke out on the eve of the second anniversary of the tragedy, describing the lack of prosecution as a “painful and unfortunate” betrayal of a young man who died in service to his country.
The Timeline of a Mystery
Emmanuel, a high-achieving Tarmac Four cadet who was due for commissioning in July 2024, was found dead on April 9, 2024, at the Hotel Royale Damgrate in Umuahia, Abia State. While initial police reports suggested a simple drowning accident, the family immediately contested the claim, noting that Emmanuel was an exceptionally skilled swimmer.
Their suspicions were validated months later. An autopsy report dated August 18, 2024, conducted by a team of pathologists led by Prof. M.A. Nnoli, categorically ruled out drowning and poisoning. The report instead attributed the death to:
- Intracranial haematoma (bleeding inside the skull)
- Skull fractures (Occipital and Right Parietal regions)
- Blunt head trauma
Allegations of Complicity
Mr. Onyeomereneche has previously pointed fingers at a fellow cadet and “supposed friend” who was with Emmanuel on the day of the incident, suggesting a motive centered on academic rivalry and placement within the Air Force. Despite these specific leads and the “conclusive evidence” of murder provided by the autopsy, the father claims the investigation has hit a brick wall.
”Is the military hiding something, protecting someone, or being complicit in the murder?” Onyeomereneche asked, specifically calling out the 82 Division Headquarters in Enugu and the Defence Headquarters for their silence.
He also expressed deep disappointment in the Abia State Government, noting that the incident occurred within sight of the Government House, yet has seemingly been met with administrative indifference.
A Call for Accountability
The family is now calling on the Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, to honor previous assurances that justice would be served.
As of press time, efforts to obtain comments from the Abia State Police Command and the 82 Division spokesperson were unsuccessful. For the Onyeomereneche family, the “golden silence” from the authorities remains a deafening reminder of a promise unkept.
