YOLA – In a significant move to combat the high rate of out-of-school children, the Adamawa State Government has officially adopted a landmark policy aimed at returning married and pregnant adolescents to the classroom.
The guidelines, titled “Re-entry to Education for Married and Pregnant Adolescents,” were unveiled on Monday, May 11, 2026, in Yola. The State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Umar Garba Pella, who performed the official adoption, emphasized that the initiative is designed to dismantle the systemic barriers that have historically ended the academic dreams of young girls due to early marriage or unplanned pregnancy.
According to Dr. Pella, the state government is committed to a “no-girl-left-behind” philosophy. He further pledged that the implementation of these guidelines would be integrated into the 2027 state education budget, ensuring sustainable funding for support systems, teacher training, and community sensitization.
The policy was developed by ACE Charity with support from the Malala Fund. It provides a structured framework for schools and child protection actors to support pregnant, married, divorced, or widowed girls, offering them pathways back into either formal or non-formal education systems.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the policy comes at a critical time when North-Eastern states are struggling with the dual challenges of cultural practices and post-conflict educational gaps. Furthermore, ValidViewNetwork reports that education advocates have hailed the move as a major victory for gender-responsive governance in Nigeria, noting that Adamawa is setting a precedent for other states in the region to follow.
Stakeholders present at the ceremony noted that while the adoption of the policy is a major milestone, the real challenge lies in execution. They called for a robust coordination mechanism between health services, community leaders, and education authorities to ensure that returning students are shielded from stigma and receive the necessary psychological support.
With this new framework, Adamawa State joins a growing list of sub-national governments taking proactive steps to rectify the gender imbalance in secondary education, aiming to empower the next generation of women to reach their full potential regardless of their life circumstances.
