The Public Relations Officer of the Borno State Police Command, ASP Nahum Daso, has advised stranded travellers to approach the nearest police station for help, emphasising that the police are not only there to enforce the law but also to protect, guide and assist the people.
The advisory was issued in a post on his official Facebook page on Thursday, ValidViewNetwork reports .
THE RESCUE
Daso cited a recent incident in which police officers in Kano State assisted a stranded traveller who left Maiduguri to visit her relatives but lost contact with them upon arrival.
“A lady travelled from Maiduguri to Kano to visit her relatives. Unfortunately, she became stranded and missing, with no mobile phone to contact anyone and no knowledge of her relatives’ residential address,” he said .
The PPRO stated that police officers intervened, established contact with the relevant authorities in her home state, traced her family in Maiduguri, and facilitated her safe return home.
THE SAFETY TIPS
Daso urged travellers to always inform a trusted family member or friend about their travel plans, destination and expected arrival time.
“Establish contact with who you are visiting and ensure they confirm their availability. Write down the full address and contact details of the person you are visiting,” he said .
“Keep your identification card and some emergency money safely with you. If you become stranded or lost: Stay calm and avoid wandering into unfamiliar or isolated areas.
Approach the nearest Police Station or identifiable Police officers and explain your situation” .
He also urged travellers in such situations to seek assistance from recognised transport authorities or other responsible public officials.
“Try to remember or provide any available details about your relatives, destination or emergency contacts. Avoid sharing sensitive personal information or accepting suspicious offers of help from strangers,” Daso stressed .
WHY IT MATTERS
The Borno Police Command’s advisory is a reminder that the police can be a source of help, not just enforcement.
For travellers, especially those unfamiliar with their destination, the police station can be a safe haven. The story of the stranded woman who was reunited with her family is a testament to the difference that a compassionate police response can make.
The advisory has been issued. The safety tips have been shared. And the police are ready to help. ValidViewNetwork reports.
