The Social Democratic Party has condemned the court ruling that sacked the David Mark-led leadership of the African Democratic Congress and nullified Atiku Abubakar’s presidential candidacy, warning that the judgment sets a dangerous precedent for Nigeria’s democracy.
The statement was issued on Thursday, in which the party also rejected the Rainbow Coalition being promoted by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, ValidViewNetwork reports .
THE CONDEMNATION
The SDP said the ruling, which invalidated all decisions taken by the ADC since July 2025, including the nomination of candidates for the 2027 elections, raised serious concerns about judicial interference in the internal affairs of political parties.
The party argued that while courts have a role in resolving disputes, the nullification of an entire party’s leadership and candidates goes beyond the bounds of judicial intervention .
THE COALITION REJECTION
The SDP also distanced itself from the Rainbow Coalition, the cross-party platform Wike has been building to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election.
The party said it would not be absorbed into any coalition that required it to sacrifice its own candidates or its political identity.
WHY IT MATTERS
The SDP’s intervention adds another voice to the growing opposition to the court ruling and to Wike’s coalition.
For the SDP, the ruling is a warning. If a court can nullify the ADC’s candidates, it could do the same to any other party. For Wike, the rejection is another setback. The coalition he is building is facing resistance from parties that do not want to be absorbed into the APC’s campaign.
The 2027 election is still months away, but the battle lines are being drawn. ValidViewNetwork reports.
