Why I’m Learning English, By MC Oluomo

The President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, has revealed that he has enrolled in formal classes to master spoken English.

Akinsanya made the disclosure while addressing Nollywood actor Adams Kehinde, widely known as Lege Miami, and supporters at a high-profile political rally organized to drum up support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid.

Addressing the crowd in Yoruba, the transport union chieftain candidly admitted that both he and Lege Miami struggle with fluency in the English language, prompting his decision to seek self-improvement through lessons.

He noted that despite his extensive international travels, fluency in the language has remained a challenge.

”Neither of us speaks English fluently, so I am taking classes to improve. I travel around the world. I am a citizen of America,” Akinsanya stated.

The NURTW leader further highlighted the educational accomplishments of his children based in the United States, pointing out that they have surpassed him in linguistic proficiency. According to him, his children have carved out successful professional careers abroad as medical and engineering practitioners.

”My children can speak better than me. My children in the US are nurses, a doctor and an engineer,” he added, noting that he occasionally hands over the microphone to them to speak on his behalf whenever he faces barriers communicating in English.

This latest development follows past public scrutiny over his command of the language, most notably in April 2025 when a video clip of him pronouncing the word “kudos” as “kundusi” during an address in Abuja sparked widespread online reactions. Responding to critics at the time, Akinsanya defended his stance, arguing that linguistic perfection does not measure a person’s overall success or capability.
