KADUNA — Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State has thrown its weight behind Senator Shehu Sani’s bid for the Kaduna Central senatorial seat under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, the endorsement came with a strong appeal: the Christian leadership has called on the former lawmaker to intercede with Governor Uba Sani for the reinstatement of traditional rulers who were dethroned during the administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Bridging Divides and Rebuilding Trust
During a strategic engagement with 48 zonal CAN leaders in Sabo Tasha, the headquarters of Chikun LGA, the local chapter’s chairman emphasized that restoring the affected traditional institutions would go a long way in fostering peace, reconciliation, and mutual trust between the government and grassroots communities.
The association noted that such a step would not only heal lingering wounds but also serve as a major catalyst for massive electoral goodwill for the APC-led administration in the state as voters head to the polls in 2027.
In addition to the reinstatement of deposed monarchs, the CAN leadership made two distinct demands:
- Traditional Upgrading: They urged Governor Uba Sani to elevate the Sa Gbagyi traditional stool to a first-class status, emphasizing that Chikun—as the host of the Kaduna State capital—deserves a traditional structure that reflects its strategic demographic and cultural weight.
- Political Inclusion: The association decried the current absence of a commissioner from Chikun LGA in the state executive cabinet, demanding equitable political appointments for qualified indigenes in the next political dispensation.
Reiterating that the ruling party belongs to all citizens regardless of creed, the CAN chairman cautioned against branding the APC as a faith-exclusive platform.
Shehu Sani Preaches Unity and Accountability
Responding to the community leaders, Senator Shehu Sani commended the association for the robust dialogue and urged religious leaders to look beyond ethnic and religious lines when evaluating political leadership.
The former senator criticized selective empathy regarding national insecurity, insisting that the sanctity of human life must never be politicized based on the victim’s background. He challenged both religious and political actors to maintain consistent standards of accountability across all administrations.
Addressing national governance, Sani advised critics and opposition figures to judge President Bola Tinubu’s administration based on objective policy performance rather than identity politics, while charging religious leaders to stay actively engaged in the nation’s political trajectory rather than abandoning the space entirely.
The high-profile consultation concluded with intercessory prayers for peace and stability in the state, led by Bishop Joe Yari.
