Bottoms Makes History as Georgia’s First Black and Female Governor, Shattering GOP’s 24-Year Hold

ATLANTA — In a watershed moment for American politics, Democrat Keisha Lance Bottoms has decisively won the gubernatorial race, shattering a 24-year Republican monopoly on the Georgia statehouse and rewriting the history books.

With her victory over Republican candidate Rick Jackson, Bottoms becomes both Georgia’s first female and first Black governor, achieving a monumental milestone as the nation’s first Black female chief executive.

A Historic Electoral Shift

Preliminary election returns showed Bottoms capturing roughly 54.2% of the vote (2,259,100 votes) to Jackson’s 45.8% (1,905,921 votes) with nearly 97% of precincts reporting. The decisive margin signals a seismic shift in the political landscape of the Deep South, ending nearly a quarter-century of GOP executive control in a state that has increasingly turned into a high-stakes national battleground.

Bottoms, the former Mayor of Atlanta whose national profile surged during her tenure and subsequent roles in public service, built a broad, energized coalition. Her campaign successfully mobilized urban centers, suburbs, and diverse working-class communities across the Peach State, overcoming fierce opposition from the state’s entrenched conservative apparatus.

Breaking Down Barriers

Political analysts note that Bottoms’ victory transcends traditional partisan boundaries, marking a long-awaited milestone for representation in a state with a rich and complex civil rights history. For generations, the state’s highest office remained exclusively in the hands of white men. By dismantling that barrier, Bottoms joins a very select tier of trailblazing women and people of color leading American states.

As governor-elect, Bottoms is expected to pivot quickly from her celebratory historic milestone to the immense policy challenges awaiting her administration, including state healthcare initiatives, public education funding, and managing the economic growth of one of the nation’s most dynamic economic hubs.
