The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to returning the nation’s fiscal planning to a predictable January-to-December cycle, announcing that the 2027 appropriation bill will be formally presented to the National Assembly before the close of December 2026.
Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, made this disclosure on Wednesday following the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
According to the minister, expediting the drafting process is designed to afford federal lawmakers adequate time to scrutinize the proposed estimates, evaluate revenue projections, and debate expenditure priorities ahead of the upcoming fiscal year. The federal budget remains the administration’s primary fiscal policy instrument, outlining key economic targets, development goals, and resource allocations.
In addition to the fiscal timeline update, the council greenlit the revised 2026 National Policy on Food and Nutrition alongside the accompanying National Nutrition Bill 2026. Crafted through a multi-sectoral collaboration involving the Office of the Vice President, relevant federal ministries, the private sector, development partners, and the National Assembly, the newly approved framework seeks to streamline nutrition programs across the country.
The minister emphasized that the initiatives aim to bolster accountability, secure sustainable funding, and significantly reduce childhood stunting rates nationwide. The executive bill will be transmitted to the legislature shortly for statutory consideration and passage.
