Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Australia and the Oceanic states, Ambassador (Dr) Olufemi “Femi” Pedro, on Tuesday formally presented his Letter of Credence to the President of the Republic of Fiji, His Excellency Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu, at the State House in Suva.
With the ceremony, Pedro has officially assumed his responsibilities as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to Fiji. He continues to serve concurrently as High Commissioner to Australia and other Oceanic nations from his base in Canberra.

Pedro, a former Deputy Governor of Lagos State (2003–2007) under then-Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, was nominated by President Tinubu in late 2025 and posted as Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, the Solomon Islands and the broader Oceanic region. He presented credentials to Australia’s Governor-General, Sam Mostyn, in June 2026, marking the start of his tour of duty.

In a statement issued after the Suva ceremony, Pedro described Nigeria–Fiji relations as warm and friendly, anchored in shared membership of the United Nations, the Commonwealth and the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS). These multilateral platforms, he noted, have enabled both countries to pursue common interests and collaborate on global and development challenges.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to deepening the longstanding friendship and expanding bilateral cooperation for mutual benefit. Priority areas highlighted include trade and investment, education, agriculture, tourism, climate resilience and people-to-people exchanges.
Pedro’s visit to Fiji also included a courtesy call on the Minister for Foreign Affairs and External Trade, Hon. Sakiasi Ditoka, during which both sides expressed determination to strengthen diplomatic ties and practical cooperation.

The presentation of credentials completes a key step in formalising Nigeria’s non-resident diplomatic representation in Fiji and underscores Abuja’s interest in broader engagement across the Pacific. Pedro has previously emphasised economic diplomacy, diaspora support and opportunities in critical minerals, agriculture, education and fintech in his Australian and regional work.
Nigeria and Fiji maintain cordial relations rooted in Commonwealth values and South–South cooperation. The formal accreditation is expected to provide a stronger platform for practical collaboration in the months ahead.
