McCarthy Defends Ouster of Ilhan Omar, Citing Security Risks
WASHINGTON — Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has doubled down on his controversial decision to strip Representative Ilhan Omar of her seat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, asserting that her personal beliefs rendered her unfit to handle top-secret intelligence.
Speaking on the motivations behind the high-stakes legislative maneuver, McCarthy stated that the panel’s access to sensitive national security details made Omar’s placement a risk. “I removed Ilhan Omar from Foreign Affairs, because you get top-secret information there, and sharing it, and her beliefs — I literally had to take that to the floor,” McCarthy said, adding that looking back on the parliamentary battle, he believes his actions were entirely justified.
The ouster, which culminated in a 218–211 vote along party lines in February 2023, followed intense Republican pressure over the Minnesota Democrat’s past rhetoric regarding Israel. GOP leadership repeatedly targeted Omar over contentious statements, most notably her 2019 social media post suggesting that congressional support for Israel was driven by financial influence, which she later apologized for.
At the time, the resolution to remove Omar formally cited those past remarks as disqualifying for a panel dealing with international diplomacy and classified briefings.
The decision provoked sharp backlash from Democratic leadership, who condemned the move as an act of political retribution rooted in xenophobia and Islamophobia. Critics argued that the standard being applied to Omar was hypocritical and designed to silence a prominent progressive voice and one of the first Muslim women elected to Congress.

Despite the fierce opposition, McCarthy successfully marshaled his narrow House majority to push through the resolution. As broader political scrutiny surrounding Omar continues to evolve in Washington, McCarthy maintains that preemptively blocking her access to national security briefings was a necessary measure to protect classified information.
