LOS ANGELES — In a stunning blow that has sent immediate shockwaves through Hollywood’s awards season landscape, the Golden Globe Awards committee has officially rejected Lionsgate’s bid to enter the blockbuster biopic Michael into the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category.
The high-stakes ruling means that the Antoine Fuqua-directed feature chronicling the legendary life of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, will now be thrust into the grueling and fiercely crowded Drama fields for the upcoming 84th ceremony.
A Strict Definition of “Musical”
According to industry reports, the committee evaluated the film under strict Golden Globe guidelines, which dictate that a contender in the Musical or Comedy field must feature songs used in tandem with spoken dialogue to actively advance the plot. Insiders note that the committee ultimately ruled the musical numbers in Michael—which stars the late pop icon’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, in a breakout lead performance—did not sufficiently drive the narrative forward to satisfy that definition.
The decision echoes previous high-profile reclassification trends that have historically forced music-centric biographical dramas like Elvis, Bohemian Rhapsody, and A Complete Unknown out of the lighter categories and directly into the dramatic trenches.
A Brutal Clash With Titans
By sliding into the Drama category, Michael avoids an easier path to nominations and must instead go toe-to-toe against some of the heaviest hitting blockbusters and prestige pictures of the year, including potential juggernauts like Christopher Nolan’s heavily anticipated The Odyssey.
Despite the setback for the main feature, the ruling leaves a silver lining for the film’s supporting ensemble. Because the Golden Globes evaluate supporting acting categories across genres, critically praised performances by Colman Domingo and Nia Long—who portray Joe and Katherine Jackson—remain fully eligible to compete in their respective categories.
Time Running Out for Lionsgate
Lionsgate is not entirely out of options just yet. The studio retains the right to formally challenge the committee’s determination, though they face a rapidly approaching October 31 appeal deadline to overturn the verdict.
