The Federal Government has commenced contact tracing after an imported case of Ebola disease was identified in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with 44 close contacts identified, ValidViewNetwork reports.

Earlier reports called the case “suspected”, but laboratory tests have now confirmed it.

Health and Social Welfare Minister Muhammad Ali Pate announced the confirmation in a statement on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.

The patient is a woman who recently arrived on an international flight from Uganda. She was admitted to a private hospital in the FCT and treated for several days before the diagnosis was confirmed. She is now in isolation and receiving care.

WHAT THE GOVERNMENT SAYS

Findings show that the infection is the Bundibugyo strain of the virus. Pate described the case as “contained” and said the Presidential Taskforce on EVD and the NCDC would keep issuing updates.

The Federal Ministry of Health, the NCDC and the FCT Health Services Secretariat are working together to stop further spread. Public and private hospitals nationwide have been told to stay on high alert.

Health workers must isolate suspected cases, follow strict infection control and report suspicions at once.

The minister also urged contacts, including airline passengers, to give the information health officials request and follow public health advice.

WARNING THAT PRECEDED THE CASE

This did not come out of nowhere. On October 6, the NCDC issued an advisory about the risk of importing the disease after a confirmed case in Kenya linked to the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

That outbreak was first reported on May 15, 2026, and also reached Uganda.

The confirmation comes 12 years after Nigeria’s first Ebola case. In 2014, a traveller landed in Lagos, and the country went on to contain the outbreak.

Today, October 20, is the anniversary of the day Nigeria was declared Ebola-free in 2014.

THE HARD QUESTION

The patient spent several days in a private hospital before a diagnosis was made. That gap is the real test. Early Ebola symptoms such as fever, fatigue and body pain look like malaria, a diagnosis Nigerian clinics make every hour.

The philosopher Karl Popper said we learn by testing our conjectures against failure. A hospital that never tests for the rare killer will always find the common illness first.

That lesson belongs to hospitals, not to the patient.Officials have not published a breakdown of the 44 contacts. ValidViewNetwork will update readers when they do.

WHAT NIGERIANS SHOULD DO

Residents should stay calm, wash hands regularly and avoid contact with the blood or body fluids of anyone suspected to have Ebola.

Anyone with symptoms or a suspected exposure should report it rather than ignore it. The NCDC’s toll-free line is 6232 and runs 24 hours a day. ValidViewNetwork reports.
