A British tourist is facing seven years behind bars after being accused of raping a woman following a cocaine and vodka binge at a Magaluf hotel.
Billy John Chard allegedly sexually assaulted the woman twice while she was unconscious and unable to consent during a holiday in Majorca.
Prosecutors claim the pair met at a pool party on July 15, 2022, before Chard invited her back to his hotel room in the popular party resort.
The woman had reportedly consumed large quantities of cocaine and vodka before losing consciousness.
According to a prosecution indictment, Chard then allegedly took advantage of her condition and raped her in the shower before moving her to the bed and sexually assaulting her again.
Prosecutors said the woman was unable to give consent or resist because of her unconscious state.
Chard, who has been held on remand since July 18, 2022, is due to stand trial in the island’s capital Palma on Thursday after he denied the charges.
If convicted, he faces seven years in prison and a 12-year ban on working with children.
Prosecutors are also seeking £5,000 in compensation for the alleged victim and want Chard ordered to complete a sex education course .
The woman’s age and nationality have not been disclosed, while the hotel where the alleged attack took place has not been identified. It remains unclear whether she will testify in person or give evidence via video link.
WHY IT MATTERS
The trial is a reminder of the vulnerability of young women in party resorts, where excessive alcohol and drug consumption can create conditions for sexual predation.
It also underscores the importance of consent—a principle that is violated when one party is unconscious and incapable of agreeing.
