Albertans have voted to remain in Canada, rejecting a proposal to hold a second referendum on independence .
With more than one million votes counted, 76.5 per cent of voters were in favour of the “remain” option, while 23.5 per cent voted in favour of the referendum option .
Premier Danielle Smith wrote on X that she was “very pleased” to see the initial results showing “widespread support” for remaining in Canada.
“Albertans have voted for a stronger Alberta in a united Canada,” she wrote. “Thank you to all Albertans who took time to vote on these critically important referendum questions” .
The independence question was added to the ballot by Smith earlier this year after she argued having a vote was the proper way to respect the hundreds of thousands of Albertans who signed petitions .
WHY IT MATTERS
The result is a decisive rejection of separatism in one of Canada’s most resource-rich provinces. It also strengthens Smith’s position within her party, which had been divided on the issue. ValidViewNetwork reports that Smith is scheduled to address Albertans on Tuesday evening.
