“MOTHER OF ALL BOMBS”: US WEIGHS MASSIVE STRIKE ON IRAN

The United States is reportedly considering using the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, known as the “Mother of All Bombs,” against Iran as tensions over Tehran’s nuclear programme escalate.

The GBU-57 is a 30,000-pound (13,600-kilogram) bunker-busting bomb designed to destroy hardened, deeply buried targets.It is the largest non-nuclear bomb in the US arsenal and is capable of penetrating up to 60 metres of reinforced concrete before detonating.

The bomb is designed to be delivered by B-2 Spirit stealth bombers.

THE CONTEXT

Iran’s nuclear facilities, including those at Fordow and Natanz, are buried deep underground and protected by reinforced concrete and earth.

Destroying these facilities would require a weapon capable of penetrating multiple layers of protection, precisely the mission for which the GBU-57 was designed.

The report comes amid heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme and its support for proxy groups across the Middle East.
