According to the statement, Nigeria’s participation was facilitated through a partnership between Anchor Heritage Initiative and Chess in School to expand educational opportunities and promote strategic thinking among inmates .

The service described its debut as a significant milestone in correctional reform, noting that the initiative demonstrated the potential of custodial facilities to nurture talent, encourage intellectual growth and prepare inmates for reintegration into society .

THE VALUE OF CHESS

The NCoS said chess could help inmates develop patience, concentration, discipline and critical thinking, while teaching them to consider the consequences of their decisions .

“Chess is more than a game of moves and counter-moves. It encourages patience, concentration, discipline, critical thinking and the ability to anticipate consequences, qualities that are essential for personal growth and responsible decision-making,” the statement said.

The service added that the game provided inmates with an opportunity to develop their mental abilities, build confidence and interact positively with others while discovering possibilities beyond their current circumstances.

“The walls may determine where a person can physically go, but the board creates a different kind of space, a space where the mind can explore, strategy can flourish and possibilities can emerge,” the statement added .

THE BROADER SIGNIFICANCE

The NCoS said the initiative reinforced the principle that incarceration should not be limited to lawful custody but should also create opportunities for reformation, skills development and personal transformation.

It also emphasised the importance of partnerships with credible organisations in advancing correctional reforms and providing inmates with meaningful rehabilitation opportunities.

The service said its participation in the international competition was more than involvement in a sporting event, describing it as a demonstration of its commitment to a correctional system that prioritises rehabilitation, education and human potential.

The service expressed optimism that initiatives such as the chess competition would contribute to preparing inmates for successful reintegration into society.

WHY IT MATTERS

Nigeria’s debut at the Chess for Freedom Competition represents a shift in how correctional facilities are perceived and how inmates are treated.

The competition, organised by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), brings together teams from correctional institutions worldwide.

Nigeria’s entry marks the country’s first appearance at the event and gives the players an opportunity to place their own stories within a much larger international conversation about rehabilitation and human potential.

For the inmates who participated, the competition was not merely a game. It was a chance to represent their country, demonstrate their skills and be seen for something beyond the circumstances that brought them into custody.
