“Upon completion of the recovery operation, the NAF will engage with appropriate environmental and public health authorities and other relevant agencies to assess the situation and coordinate appropriate action to address any identified environmental concerns,” Ejodame said .
He said the Nigerian Air Force remained concerned about the well-being of the affected community and was committed to constructive engagement with stakeholders .“Appropriate measures will be taken in the interest of public health, safety and environmental wellbeing,” he said .
THE BACKSTORY: WHAT RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN SAYING
The NAF’s assurance followed days of complaints from residents about the stench from the river where the aircraft crashed, which they said had made life unbearable and raised fears of disease .
The Olu of Igbokoda, Oba Afolabi Odidiomo, had described the situation in stark terms: “The odour is extremely offensive and unbearable. So many parts of human bodies are floating around in the river. Some of the bodies have not been recovered, they have decomposed and it is affecting everything”.
Residents said body parts were floating in the water, and traces of aviation fuel were visible on the river some distance from the wreckage site.
Omogbemi Damola, a resident, said she had been perceiving the foul odour in her upstairs apartment for days.
Oroyo Levy, another resident, said the situation had gone beyond discomfort to a public health concern: “We are appealing to government to act swiftly to contain the odour and prevent it from posing further health risks. The smell suggests air pollution and we are worried about its effect, especially on children” .
THE ONDO STATE GOVERNMENT’S RESPONSE
The Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, had earlier ordered the extensive fumigation of the Igbokoda River and the distribution of nose masks and other health kits to residents .
The state Commissioner for Environment, Tob Loko, had acknowledged the pollution: “Shortly afterwards, concerns about pollution were raised. What we are trying to do is make a holistic assessment of the level of public health impact and determine how we can embark on decontamination efforts because the surrounding area is surely contaminated” .

The NAF ATR-42 aircraft, with registration number NAF 931, crashed into a swampy area of Igbokoda on October 5, 2026, during a routine mission from Benin City, Edo State, to Lagos.
The incident claimed the lives of all 25 people on board, comprising five crew members and 20 passengers .
The recovery operation has been complicated by the swampy terrain and the aircraft’s submersion in the water.
WHY IT MATTERS
The NAF’s assurance addresses the immediate concerns of the community but leaves important questions unanswered.
The statement did not provide a timeline for the completion of recovery operations or the environmental assessment. It did not specify which agencies would be involved or what measures would be taken.
For the residents of Igbokoda, the wait continues. They have already endured the trauma of the crash. They now face the daily reality of a polluted environment and the fear of disease.
The fumigation ordered by the state government and the NAF’s assurance of engagement are steps in the right direction. But for a community living with the stench of decomposition and the sight of body parts in their river, action cannot come soon enough.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the NAF has assured Igbokoda residents of action on environmental concerns. The timeline for implementation remains unclear.
