A Borno State High Court sitting in Maiduguri has sentenced a 37-year-old woman, Fatima Sanda, to two years’ imprisonment for procuring a 16-year-old girl for sexual exploitation.
The Borno woman jailed sexual assault conviction was secured by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) on Monday .
THE CONVICTION
The court, presided over by Hon. Justice Aisha M. Ndume of Court 10, convicted Sanda for procuring the teenager and subjecting her to sexual exploitation by other persons, contrary to Section 16(1) of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015, as amended .
The judgment was delivered on Monday, October 12, 2026, according to a NAPTIP statement published on Wednesday .
THE SENTENCE
Beyond the two-year prison term, the court ordered Sanda to pay N500,000 in compensation to the victim .“She was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment and ordered to pay N500,000 in compensation to the victim,” the NAPTIP statement read .
THE AGENCY’S COMMITMENT
NAPTIP used the occasion to restate its commitment to fighting human trafficking and shielding vulnerable people, especially children, from sexual abuse and exploitation .
WHY IT MATTERS
The conviction represents a rare case of accountability in a country where human trafficking and sexual exploitation often go unpunished. It sends a message that those who procure minors for sexual exploitation will face the full weight of the law.
For the 16-year-old victim, the compensation and the conviction are small measures of justice. For other potential victims and perpetrators, the message is clear: the law will pursue you.
