A pedestrian has been killed while crossing Ojota Road in Lagos in a hit-and-run accident, the latest in a troubling pattern of road deaths involving pedestrians in the state.
The victim was reportedly knocked down by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene immediately after the collision, leaving the pedestrian with fatal injuries.
Emergency responders were said to have arrived at the scene, but the victim was confirmed dead.
A REPEATING TRAGEDY
Ojota is one of Lagos’s busiest transport corridors, connecting the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway to major parts of the mainland. It is also one of its most dangerous for pedestrians.
The area is characterised by heavy vehicular traffic, informal bus parks, roadside trading and pedestrian crossings that are often ignored or obstructed.
Pedestrians attempting to cross the road frequently do so in the absence of functioning pedestrian bridges, traffic signals or enforcement. The result is predictable. Deaths occur, drivers flee, and the cycle repeats.
THE HIT-AND-RUN PROBLEM
Hit-and-run accidents present a specific challenge for enforcement and justice. When a driver flees, identification becomes dependent on witnesses, surveillance footage or vehicle registration details.
In the absence of these, cases often go unsolved.
Families of victims are left without accountability, and the fleeing driver remains on the road.
Advocates for road safety argue that the solution involves three elements: enforcement of traffic laws, installation and maintenance of surveillance infrastructure, and public education on pedestrian rights and driver responsibility.
WHY IT MATTERS
Nigeria loses thousands of lives annually to road traffic accidents. Pedestrians, who are the most vulnerable road users, account for a significant share of these deaths.
Each death is not merely a statistic. It is a family’s loss, a community’s grief, and a failure of the systems meant to protect citizens.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the driver remains at large. The victim has not yet been identified.
