Tragedy struck in Ondo State during a routine traffic check when a truck allegedly crushed a Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO), Sesan Adediji, to death.
The police have confirmed the arrest of the driver, Ayoade Idowu, in connection with the fatal incident, ValidViewNetwork reports.
According to reports, the incident occurred when the officer attempted to flag down the truck. The suspect allegedly lost control or failed to stop, leading to the fatal collision.
A ROUTINE CHECK TURNS FATAL
Routine traffic checks are a common sight on Nigerian roads.VIO officers are tasked with ensuring that vehicles comply with safety and roadworthiness standards.
However, these duties often expose officers to significant risks, particularly when dealing with heavy-duty vehicles and drivers who may be unwilling to comply.
The death of Adediji is a stark reminder of these risks. What should have been a routine stop ended in tragedy, leaving the officer’s family, colleagues and the community in mourning.
CALLS FOR STRICTER SAFETY MEASURES
The incident has sparked calls for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations to protect personnel on duty.
VIO officers are often required to work in exposed conditions, with little protection from errant drivers or vehicles. There have been previous incidents of officers being injured or killed during traffic stops.
Stakeholders argue that more must be done to safeguard the lives of those who enforce traffic laws. This includes providing better training, protective equipment and support systems for VIO officers. It also includes holding drivers accountable for their actions.
THE POLICE INVESTIGATION
The police have confirmed the arrest of the driver and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident. The outcome of the investigation will determine whether the driver faces criminal charges.
For the family of the deceased officer, justice will be a critical part of their healing process. But no amount of justice can bring back a loved one.
The incident serves as a reminder that road safety is a shared responsibility. Drivers must exercise caution and respect for traffic officials, while authorities must ensure that officers are protected as they carry out their duties.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the driver, Ayoade Idowu, is in police custody. The lesson is that the safety of traffic officials must be prioritised.
