TikTok Video: Amnesty Challenges Madonna University’s Punishment of Nursing Students

Madonna University is facing growing calls to reconsider its disciplinary action against nursing students involved in a viral TikTok video, with rights advocates questioning whether expulsion and lengthy suspension are proportionate responses to the incident.

The university’s Elele campus in Rivers State expelled one final-year nursing student, identified in reports as Mercy, and suspended 14 other 500-level nursing students after a video showing students dancing in different parts of a hospital environment circulated widely on social media.

The sanctions have triggered debate about professional ethics, the responsibilities of nursing students and the limits of university disciplinary powers.

Amnesty International has called on the university to reverse the sanctions, describing the punishment as disproportionate and urging dialogue and mediation, ValidViewNetwork reports.

WHAT THE VIDEO SHOWED

The video featured nursing students dancing in locations that included a hospital waiting area, a staircase, a corridor and a bus on the university’s premises. The clip was associated with the social media trend known as the “Gen Z nurses” challenge.It carried the Pidgin caption, “No fall sick o, na Gen Z full hospital now.”

The video attracted criticism from some viewers, who argued that the setting and caption were inappropriate for students preparing to enter a profession that requires sensitivity, confidentiality and respect for patients.

Others argued that the punishment was excessive, particularly because the affected students were reportedly in their final year and had invested years of study and substantial financial resources in their education.

Madonna University’s Director of Communications and Public Affairs, Chima Achu, confirmed that the video was recorded inside the institution’s teaching hospital. The university’s disciplinary action subsequently became the subject of widespread public debate.

WHY THE UNIVERSITY’S CONCERNS CANNOT BE DISMISSED

Nursing is a profession built on patient safety, dignity, confidentiality and public trust.Students undergoing clinical training must understand that a hospital is not simply another location for social media content.

Patients may be ill, distressed or unable to protect their privacy. Even where a video does not deliberately identify a patient, recording or performing in a clinical environment can raise legitimate questions about professional judgment and respect for the setting.

The caption also matters because viewers may interpret it as making light of patients’ illnesses. The students’ actions therefore deserve scrutiny. It would be wrong to dismiss every concern as an attack on young people’s freedom of expression.

Universities have a responsibility to prepare students for professional practice, and that includes teaching them how to behave responsibly in clinical environments and on social media.

BUT DOES THE PUNISHMENT FIT THE OFFENCE?

Recognising the university’s responsibility does not automatically justify every sanction it imposes.

Expulsion is among the most serious disciplinary measures an institution can take against a student. It can end years of academic work and create substantial financial, emotional and professional consequences.

The university should therefore be able to explain why the particular conduct warranted expulsion rather than a lesser sanction.

Relevant questions include whether patients were identifiable, whether patient care was disrupted, whether the students had previously received warnings, what provisions of the university’s rules were breached and whether the students had an opportunity to respond.

The answers matter because disciplinary decisions should be based on established rules, evidence and a fair process. A video can be inappropriate without necessarily justifying the harshest available punishment.

Equally, the fact that students are close to graduation does not exempt them from professional standards.

The task is to determine a proportionate response that protects patients, upholds professional ethics and respects the students’ right to fair treatment.

THE CALL FOR A REVIEW

Amnesty International has urged Madonna University to rescind the expulsion and suspension decisions and pursue dialogue and mediation.

The National Association of Nigerian Students has also appealed to the institution to reconsider the sanctions, acknowledging that the conduct was inappropriate while urging the university to protect the students’ academic futures.

These calls do not establish that the university’s action was unlawful. That question would depend on the applicable rules, the facts and any legal proceedings that might follow.

However, they raise a legitimate issue of proportionality.

The university could review whether the punishment adequately distinguishes the role played by each student, the nature of the conduct and the circumstances surrounding the recording. It could also consider additional ethics training, formal warnings, supervised clinical service or other disciplinary measures where appropriate under its rules.

Such alternatives should not be treated as automatic entitlements. They are options the institution could evaluate through a fair review.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY

The controversy illustrates a wider challenge facing universities and professional training institutions.

Social media encourages students to create entertaining content, participate in trends and seek attention through viral posts.

But professional education requires students to recognise that some environments demand greater restraint.

Future nurses must understand that patients are not props, medical facilities are not unrestricted filming locations and online popularity does not override professional obligations.

Universities, however, should also make their rules clear and apply them consistently. Students should know what conduct is prohibited, what sanctions may follow and how they can appeal disciplinary decisions.

WHAT MADONNA UNIVERSITY SHOULD DO

The institution should explain the rules that informed its decision, clarify the evidence considered and demonstrate that the students received a fair opportunity to respond.

A review would not require the university to pretend the video was appropriate. It would allow management to determine whether the sanctions were justified and whether a less severe response could achieve the same educational and professional objectives.

The students, for their part, should acknowledge the importance of patient dignity and professional conduct, regardless of the outcome of any review.
