The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its strike at three Lagos state-owned universities, directing lecturers to resume work immediately.

The suspension brings an end to an industrial action that had paralysed academic activities at Lagos State University (LASU), Lagos State University of Education (LASUED), and Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).

THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS: HOW THE STRIKE UNFOLDED

August 31, 2026: ASUU issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Lagos State Government, demanding the domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement, including the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and welfare provisions for academic staff

September 10, 2026: ASUU issued a final warning, stating that “silence is no longer an option” and that continued inaction would not be tolerated

September 13, 2026: The ultimatum expired without satisfactory resolution from the Lagos State Government.September 14, 2026: ASUU declared a total, comprehensive, and indefinite strike across LASU, LASUED, and LASUSTECH .

The union stated that the strike would remain in force until the government entered meaningful negotiations

October 2, 2026: The Joint Action Committee of unions (ASUU, SSANU, NASU, NAAT) initiated an indefinite strike after citing nine months of unpaid salary arrears from January to September 2026 and the failure to implement agreed salary structures

October 10, 2026: ASUU suspends the strike, directing lecturers to resume.

THE DEMANDS

The union’s principal demand was the full domestication and implementation of the December 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement across all Lagos State-owned universities .

Key demands included:

· Nine months of unpaid salary arrears (January to September 2026)

· Implementation of the agreed salary structure

· A 15% “Lagos Factor” allowance to reflect the high cost of living in Lagos

· Fulfilment of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s 2023 pledges for a 20% salary increase and five Marcopolo buses

POLITICAL REACTION

The 2027 governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour (GRV), criticised the Lagos State Government for the strike.

“Since 2 October 2026, all four Lagos State-owned universities: LASU, LASUED, LASUSTECH and LASUCOM have been shut by an indefinite strike. This was avoidable and unacceptable,” GRV lamented.

He called for immediate payment of arrears and full implementation of the “Lagos Factor” allowance, noting that “Lagos is now the biggest recipient of federal allocations among Nigeria’s states. Its internally generated revenue is unquestionably the highest, but yet it lacks empathy towards its workers”.

The suspension of the strike means lecturers will resume work immediately. Students who have been idled for weeks can expect academic activities to resume.

But the underlying dispute remains unresolved. ASUU’s statement suspending the strike did not indicate that its demands had been met.

Rather, the suspension appears to be a tactical withdrawal, possibly to allow for further negotiations or to ease pressure on students and parents. The union has previously warned that it could resume the strike if the government fails to address its demands

A PATTERN OF INSTABILITY

The strike at Lagos state universities is part of a broader pattern of industrial action in Nigeria’s tertiary education sector. ASUU has engaged in numerous strikes over the years, often over the same issues: funding, salaries, and the implementation of agreements.

Each strike disrupts academic calendars, delays graduations, and imposes costs on students and their families. The suspension of the current strike is welcome news.

But until the underlying issues are resolved, the threat of future disruption remains.

ValidViewNetwork reports that lecturers are expected to resume immediately. The lesson is that in Nigeria’s universities, stability is always temporary.
