The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, of exploiting the abduction of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to frame Biafran agitators, demanding an independent investigation into the incident.
The abduction occurred on October 1, 2026, when gunmen attacked two buses conveying the prospective corps members along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State .
The victims were travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, to NYSC orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states when the attack occurred.
They were rescued on October 7 at Amakohia Ubi Village in Owerri West Local Government Area after a joint operation by the police, military, DSS, and other security agencies.
IPOB’S ALLEGATION
IPOB claims that Governor Uzodimma is using the kidnapping crisis to target Biafran activists and distract from his administration’s failures.
The group alleges that the governor is attempting to link the abduction to IPOB and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in order to justify a crackdown on separatist agitators.
The accusation is not new. IPOB has long accused South-East governors of colluding with federal authorities to persecute its members.
THE GOVERNOR’S RESPONSE
Governor Uzodimma has consistently denied such allegations. Following the rescue of the NYSC members, he praised the security agencies for their “discreet and collaborative manner” in securing the victims’ release .
He said the government deliberately kept details of the operation private to protect the lives of the captives.
“I am particularly grateful to the security agencies for the discreet and collaborative manner in which they tackled the challenge,” Uzodimma said .
The governor also commended the parents of the victims for their patience and urged Nigerians to continue supporting efforts to address security challenges.
THE RESCUE OPERATION
According to police reports, the victims were rescued after “sustained search and rescue operations”.
Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, said the victims had been taken for medical assessment and necessary care.
The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, visited the rescued victims at the DSS Hospital in Owerri.
Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma confirmed the release in a telephone conversation with the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja .
Authorities have not disclosed whether any suspect has been arrested or whether ransom was paid .
THE POLITICAL UNDERCURRENT
The abduction and rescue of the NYSC members have become entangled in the volatile politics of Nigeria’s South-East.

The region has been plagued by separatist violence, with IPOB’s ESN and other armed groups clashing with security forces. The Nigerian government has proscribed IPOB as a terrorist organisation.
In this context, any security incident in the South-East is immediately politicised. Allegations of complicity, ethnic profiling, and political manipulation are common.
IPOB’s demand for an independent probe reflects its deep distrust of federal and state authorities. Whether that distrust is justified is a matter of perspective.
THE HUMAN COST
Amid the political wrangling, it is easy to forget the human dimension of this story. Twenty young Nigerians, graduates preparing for mandatory national service, were abducted at gunpoint and held for six days.
Their families endured days of uncertainty and fear. They were rescued. But others have not been so fortunate.
The politicisation of their ordeal does them no favours. What they need is not political point-scoring but a commitment to ensuring that such abductions never happen again.
ValidViewNetwork reports that IPOB has demanded an independent probe. The group’s accusations remain unsubstantiated.
