Mauritania’s prime minister has submitted his government’s resignation following an investigation into fires at major electricity facilities that caused widespread power outages, bringing renewed attention to infrastructure management and political accountability.

ValidViewNetwork reports that Mauritanian Prime Minister Mokhtar Ould Djay submitted his government’s resignation to President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani on October 9.

The resignation followed the president’s receipt of a report from a commission investigating fires at electricity substations in Nouakchott, the country’s capital, and surrounding areas.

The presidency confirmed that the prime minister submitted the resignation during a meeting at the presidential palace. It did not provide a detailed explanation of the political implications of the decision.

FIRES DISRUPTED ELECTRICITY SUPPLY

The fires occurred on August 21 and 22 at transformer substations operated by the Mauritanian Electricity Company, known as Somelec.

The incidents disrupted electricity supply across parts of Nouakchott and affected nearby communities, including Ouad Naga, Idini and Aouleigat.

The outages lasted several days, with the duration varying by location. The electricity company later reported that supply had been restored following repairs. The disruption raised concerns about the reliability of critical infrastructure and the systems used to prevent and manage major technical failures.

INVESTIGATION IDENTIFIES SHORTCOMINGS

The commission’s report identified serious shortcomings involving prevention, electrical protection, supervision of work and emergency management. It also linked the likely cause of the fires to overheating associated with newly installed electrical lines.

The investigation reportedly found no evidence of sabotage or operational error. That distinction matters because a technical failure should not automatically be characterised as deliberate interference or criminal conduct.

The findings instead focused attention on infrastructure design, maintenance, supervision and emergency response.

POLITICAL ACCOUNTABILITY

Ould Djay had served as prime minister since August 2024, when he was appointed at the beginning of President Ghazouani’s second term.

His resignation places responsibility for the next phase of government in the hands of the president, who must determine the country’s leadership arrangements.

The resignation followed the investigation, but the available information does not establish that a single finding automatically required the entire government to step down. It is therefore important to distinguish the timing of the resignation from any unconfirmed explanation of the president’s decision.

LESSONS FOR INFRASTRUCTURE MANAGEMENT

Electricity systems are essential to households, hospitals, businesses and public services. Failures can disrupt daily life and expose weaknesses in maintenance, emergency planning and oversight.

A credible response requires more than restoring power. Authorities must identify the causes, implement recommendations and explain what will change to reduce the risk of recurrence.

ValidViewNetwork reports that Mauritania’s government resigned after the investigation brought major infrastructure shortcomings into focus. The wider lesson is that public institutions must treat critical infrastructure as a core responsibility. Transparent investigations and corrective action help rebuild public confidence and reduce the likelihood of similar failures.
