NYSC ABDUCTION: MOTHER CALLS FOR AIRLIFTS AND SECURITY ESCORTS NATIONWIDE

The abduction of 20 prospective National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members in Imo State has intensified calls for a fundamental review of how young graduates travel to their orientation camps, with the mother of one of the rescued victims urging the Federal Government to consider air transport or provide adequate security escorts for corps members nationwide.

The demand follows an incident that exposed the dangers facing graduates who travel long distances to fulfil their national service obligations. This raises questions about whether the existing arrangements adequately protect young Nigerians at a particularly vulnerable stage of their lives, ValidViewNetwork reports.

Mrs Faith Felicia Abiala, the mother of one of the rescued prospective corps members, said the government should ensure that graduates travelling to their states of deployment receive adequate protection.

She also suggested air transport as a possible alternative to dangerous road journeys. According to her, the experience of learning that her daughter had been abducted was devastating.

Mrs Abiala said she struggled emotionally during the period of uncertainty but was grateful that her daughter returned alive. She commended the Department of State Services (DSS) and security personnel from Oyo and Imo states for their roles in the efforts surrounding the victims’ release.

Her proposal reflects a growing concern among families that the safety of prospective corps members should not depend on luck, family connections or the ability of relatives to mobilise assistance when disaster strikes.

HOW THE ABDUCTION UNFOLDED

The 20 prospective corps members were abducted on October 1, 2026, while travelling from Ibadan, Oyo State, towards orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.

They were travelling in two buses when gunmen attacked them along the Owerri-Onitsha Road in the Umunoha area of Mbaitoli Local Government Area, Imo State.

Thirty prospective corps members were reportedly travelling in the two buses. Ten escaped during the attack, while the remaining 20 were taken into captivity.

The kidnappers reportedly demanded as much as ₦50 million for each victim, placing an extraordinary financial burden on families already dealing with the fear that their children might not return alive.

The incident triggered a search-and-rescue operation involving security agencies. Authorities subsequently reported that the victims had been located and that efforts were underway to secure their release.

The abductees eventually regained their freedom after seven days in captivity. Their release brought relief to their families, but it also exposed weaknesses in the arrangements for transporting prospective corps members to orientation camps.

WHY AIR TRANSPORT IS AN ATTRACTIVE PROPOSAL

Airlifting prospective corps members has an obvious advantage: it could reduce their exposure to dangerous road corridors, particularly where kidnapping incidents have become a recurring security concern.

The proposal also deserves attention because NYSC deployment is a national programme.

Graduates may be assigned to states hundreds of kilometres from their homes, often requiring long journeys through unfamiliar communities.

A centrally coordinated transport arrangement could allow the government to establish approved travel schedules, verify passenger lists and improve communication with security agencies.

Where air transport is available, it could be particularly useful for journeys involving long distances or routes identified through credible security assessments as exceptionally dangerous.

However, an attractive proposal is not automatically a workable national policy.

THE COST AND IMPLEMENTATION PROBLEM

A nationwide airlift programme would require aircraft, trained personnel, operational funding, passenger coordination and access to suitable airports or airstrips.

Nigeria also has prospective corps members travelling to communities that do not have convenient airports. Air transport would therefore not eliminate road travel altogether.

Many graduates would still need secure transportation between their homes, airports and orientation camps.

Chartering aircraft for every prospective corps member could also prove expensive, especially when multiplied across successive orientation exercises. The government would need to determine whether the programme could operate sustainably without diverting resources from other essential security responsibilities.

Security escorts present their own difficulties. Providing armed personnel for every bus carrying prospective corps members across the country would require substantial manpower and coordination.

An escort system could also become ineffective if security agencies lacked reliable intelligence about changing threats along particular routes.

The stronger alternative is a risk-based national transport and protection policy rather than a blanket promise to fly every corps member.

Under such an arrangement, the NYSC could coordinate approved transport operators, establish designated departure points, monitor journeys, assess dangerous routes and organise escorted convoys where credible intelligence warrants them.

The government could also provide subsidised group transport, emergency communication arrangements and clear procedures for reporting delays or suspected security threats.

Air transport should remain an option for particularly dangerous or impractical routes where the infrastructure and funding make it feasible.

A NATIONAL SERVICE THAT MUST PROTECT ITS PARTICIPANTS

The abduction also raises a broader question about the responsibility of the government towards graduates who enter the NYSC scheme.

National service is intended to promote national integration, expose young people to different communities and encourage contributions to national development.

Those objectives become difficult to defend when families reasonably fear that travelling to an assigned state could expose their children to kidnapping.

Prospective corps members should not have to choose between obeying a national deployment directive and taking avoidable risks with their lives.

The government must therefore make safety an integral part of the programme rather than treating it as a matter to be addressed only after an attack.

WHAT THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD DO NEXT

The Federal Government and NYSC management should review the security arrangements surrounding orientation exercises, identify vulnerable transport corridors and establish a coordinated system for monitoring prospective corps members from departure to arrival.

The review should also examine the frequency of attacks involving corps members, the effectiveness of existing travel advisories and whether transport companies comply with the programme’s safety requirements.

Parents should receive reliable information about approved travel arrangements and emergency contacts. Most importantly, any new policy should be supported by a realistic budget, clearly assigned responsibilities and measurable safety targets.

The safe return of the 20 prospective corps members is welcome news. However, their release should not mark the end of the national conversation about their safety.
