A motorist escaped without injury after a train collided with his car at the PWD railway line in Lagos, although the vehicle suffered extensive damage and the incident disrupted traffic.
ValidViewNetwork reports that a 55-year-old man escaped unhurt after a moving train collided with his Honda car at the PWD railway line in Lagos on October 9.
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority confirmed the incident, saying the train was travelling towards Agege when the collision occurred.
The vehicle, with registration number EKY 902 JT, was extensively damaged.
LASTMA described it as virtually a complete write-off. No casualty was recorded at the scene.
VEHICLE HANDED OVER FOR INVESTIGATION
Following the collision, the damaged car was handed over to security personnel for investigation into the circumstances of the incident.
The available information does not establish precisely how the car came to be on the railway line or whether any traffic-control failure contributed to the collision.
Those details should be established through the investigation rather than speculation.
RAILWAY SAFETY CONCERNS
Train collisions with road vehicles can have serious consequences because trains require considerable distances to stop and cannot manoeuvre around obstacles in the same way as cars.
Motorists approaching railway crossings should observe warning signs, signals, barriers and instructions from authorised personnel. Drivers should never attempt to beat an approaching train or cross when a warning system indicates that a train is near.
Railway operators and transport authorities also have a responsibility to maintain effective safety systems and ensure that road users can identify and obey crossing instructions.
THE NEED FOR CAUTION
The fact that the driver escaped injury is fortunate, but the extensive damage to the vehicle demonstrates the potential danger of collisions involving trains.
The investigation should establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and determine whether any safety or traffic-control measures need improvement.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the collision caused substantial damage but no reported injuries.
The incident is a reminder that railway crossings demand strict caution. A few moments saved by taking a risk can expose motorists, passengers and railway workers to potentially fatal consequences.
