NDLEA Nets Enugu Meth Lab Linked to Mexican Cartel

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has dismantled a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in Enugu State tied to a Nigerian-Mexican drug network, arresting two alleged kingpins and recovering large quantities of precursor chemicals after months of surveillance.

The facility, located in the Eziama community of Obeagu in Awgu Local Government Area, was capable of commercial-scale production. It was equipped with improvised reactors and distillation equipment similar to labs previously shut down by the agency in Ogun, Oyo and Ebonyi states.

Arrested were 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, also known as Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, alias George. The pair allegedly ran the operation in partnership with Rodriguez Villanueva, described by the NDLEA as a member of a Mexican drug cartel based in Mexico City. Three other suspects named in the charges—Uchenna (alias Uche), Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu and Villanueva—remain at large.

The two men were arraigned before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello of the Federal High Court, Enugu Judicial Division, on a five-count charge involving conspiracy, the organisation, management and financing of a drug trafficking organisation, and unlawful possession of precursor chemicals used in methamphetamine production. They pleaded to the charges. Following an application by the NDLEA for an accelerated hearing, the court fixed the trial for 21 October 2026.

According to the agency, its Special Operations Unit tracked Brown’s movements between Lagos, Enugu and Anambra states from 1 to 4 December 2025. The surveillance led operatives to the compound where the laboratory was discovered. A search recovered substantial quantities of chemicals, including 690 litres of methylamine, 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol, 300 litres of hydrochloric acid, 290 litres each of toluene and acetone, 400 litres of liquid sodium hydroxide, 125 kilograms of N-phenylacetamide, 414 kilograms of lead acetate and 769.6 kilograms of tartaric acid, among other controlled substances. The haul was consistent with a high-potency, P2P-based methamphetamine manufacturing process.

A related search of George’s family residence yielded eight large fuel tanks, four commercial gas burners, four dehydrators and 11 kilograms of ephedrine, underscoring the scale of the operation.

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd), praised the officers involved for their professionalism and determination. He reiterated the agency’s commitment to tracking down all remaining suspects connected to the cartel and ensuring they face justice. Marwa described the Enugu bust as further evidence that Nigeria will not serve as a safe haven for transnational drug networks, stressing that intelligence-led operations and international partnerships would continue to close loopholes exploited by local and foreign traffickers.

The case forms part of a broader pattern of NDLEA actions against sophisticated methamphetamine laboratories linked to Mexican technical expertise and Nigerian organisers, with previous major discoveries in forest locations in Ogun and Oyo states earlier in 2026. The agency has maintained that sustained pressure remains essential to disrupt production and trafficking networks across the country.
