Canada has officially activated retaliatory tariffs ranging from 15% to 50% on approximately $20 billion worth of American goods, firing a major counter-salvo that deepens an intensifying economic conflict between the two historic allies.
The sweeping measures, which came into effect on Tuesday, target hundreds of U.S. products—including steel, aluminum, household appliances, furniture, and agricultural goods. Ottawa’s actions are designed to match Washington’s recent protectionist duties dollar-for-dollar, following the collapse of high-stakes trade negotiations in August between Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump.
Prime Minister Carney defended the retaliation as an unavoidable measure to safeguard Canadian workers, farmers, and businesses, while emphasizing that Ottawa remains open to securing a fair, equitable agreement. However, with bilateral channels currently frozen and no fresh talks scheduled, economists and industry leaders warn that the breakdown threatens to fracture integrated cross-border supply chains that support hundreds of thousands of jobs on both sides of the border.
The confrontation has rapidly expanded past traditional commerce. President Trump has threatened additional punitive actions against strategic Canadian sectors, including aerospace giant Bombardier, while wider disagreements over the architecture of North American trade continue to mount. As punitive duties ripple through consumer markets, mounting commercial and political pressure is being directed at Washington and Ottawa to halt the escalation before it inflicts permanent structural damage on the regional economy.
