The Nigeria Immigration Service has clarified that Nigerians in the diaspora do not need a valid passport to travel home, as expired passports can still be used for the journey and renewed once the holder is back in the country. The clarification is coming as many Nigerians abroad plan their end-of-year trips home.

A Door Opens for Diaspora Nigerians

For many Nigerians living abroad, the prospect of returning home for the holidays has often been complicated by a single, stubborn obstacle: an expired passport.

That obstacle has now been removed.

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has clarified that Nigerians in the diaspora do not need a valid passport to travel home, as expired passports can still be used for the journey and renewed once the holder is back in the country.

The clarification is coming as many Nigerians abroad plan their end-of-year trips home, with the NIS noting that travellers coming in for the December season can conveniently use the visit to process their passport renewal while in Nigeria rather than waiting to do so abroad.

A Practical Solution for a Common Problem

The announcement addresses a recurring challenge faced by Nigerians in the diaspora, particularly those in the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries where passport renewal backlogs have become a significant source of frustration.

Many Nigerians had found themselves trapped abroad, unable to travel home for important family events because their passports had expired.

Service Continues Uninterrupted

On the situation in the United Kingdom, the NIS said the ongoing passport intervention has not disrupted regular services at the High Commission, as applicants whose appointments fall due continue to be attended to as scheduled.

Service spokesmen, DCI Akinsola Akinlabi, also confirmed that the contactless passport application platform remains fully operational, giving Nigerians who prefer not to visit a passport office in person the option of processing their renewal remotely through the app.

A Lesson for Nigeria

The NIS’s clarification is a practical solution that addresses a real problem faced by millions of Nigerians abroad.

It is a reminder that bureaucracy should serve the people, not the other way around.

For too long, Nigerians have been forced to navigate administrative hurdles that make simple tasks, like returning home, unnecessarily complicated.

The NIS has shown that when government agencies are willing to be flexible, they can make a tangible difference in the lives of citizens. For Nigeria, the lesson is clear: the purpose of government is to solve problems, not create them.

The same officials who create bureaucratic bottlenecks will never allow their own families to be trapped abroad by expired documents.

Their families are protected. But for millions of ordinary Nigerians, this announcement is a lifeline.
