Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has disclosed that his former business venture centered around selling bean cakes and bread generated at least N10 million monthly before he transitioned into politics.
Speaking during the state’s monthly covenant prayer service, the governor explained that the enterprise operated out of a permanent shop location, catering heavily to corporate workers heading to ExxonMobil in the mornings. According to him, the outfit popularized a local variation he called the “Akara Burger”—slicing open loaves of bread and stuffing them with hot akara—while also running an adjoining coffee shop.
The disclosure has reignited national conversations surrounding micro-enterprises and informal trade. It follows previous remarks by First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, who had earlier encouraged citizens to leverage small-scale ventures like akara and kuli-kuli trading to improve their livelihoods, a comment that had drawn mixed reactions over economic realities.
Governor Eno pointed to his background as proof of the wealth-building potential inherent in modest beginnings, noting that strategic location and product packaging can transform basic food services into high-volume commercial enterprises.
