For centuries, the crown has been more than a mere ornament. In the Yoruba cosmology, the Oba is not just a ruler; he is the physical anchor of communal identity, the bridge between the living and the ancestors, and the living embodiment of customs that stretch back through the mists of time.

Yet, in the age of TikTok, globalisation, and radical modernisation, the mystical aura of the throne is facing an unprecedented crisis. Is the Oba of today a custodian of heritage, or a willing participant in its slow, agonising erosion?

This is the explosive question that will take centre stage at the 49th edition of Boiling Point Arena, the renowned monthly current affairs discourse, scheduled for Sunday, November 8, 2026, at 8 p.m.

The theme is as provocative as it is urgent: “Yoruba Obas, Cultural Desecration and the Crisis of Royal Authority: The Dividing Line Between Cultural Change and Cultural Disrespect.”

ValidViewNetwork reports that the discourse will bring together a formidable trio of thinkers whose distinct backgrounds promise a deep, unflinching interrogation of an institution at a crossroads.

They are Dr Yemi Farounbi, a cultural icon and former Nigeria’s Ambassador to the Philippines and the Kingdom of Cambodia; Chief Dare Babarinsa, a media icon and veteran journalist; and Chief Bode Mustapha, an Egba high chief and prominent businessman.

THE DIVIDING LINE

The fundamental argument underpinning this debate strikes at the heart of Yoruba ontology: the distinction between the man and the throne.

The Oba may have personal preferences, individual convictions, and a contemporary outlook. However, the office he occupies carries historical and cultural responsibilities that are not subject to his personal whims.

When does a monarch’s personal expression become an affront to the cultural institution he represents? Should an Oba be free to disregard inherited customs simply because he believes they are outdated?

Or does the throne impose obligations that must be respected regardless of the occupant’s inclinations?

In traditional Yoruba society, royal symbols—crowns, beads, ceremonial clothing, were never just decorative. They carried profound meanings associated with legitimacy, spiritual authority, and the history of the community.

Certain palace practices and customary restrictions reinforced the special position of the monarch. Today, the proliferation of social media has collapsed the distance between the palace and the public, exposing royal conduct to unprecedented scrutiny.

Recent public conversations surrounding the conduct and unconventional public presentations of some Yoruba monarchs have brought these questions into sharper focus.

The 49th Boiling Point Arena will confront this head-on. The panel will examine whether contemporary Yoruba monarchs are preserving the cultural essence of the institution, or if their actions are contributing to the erosion of the traditions that confer dignity and legitimacy on the throne.

THE PANEL OF GLADIATORS

The discussion will be anchored by veteran journalist and communication strategy expert Ayo Arowojolu.

To ensure the conversation is grounded in royal wisdom, a frontline traditional ruler, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Prof Saka Matemilola, will Chair the session and herald the discourse with a keynote address.

Ambassador Yemi Farounbi is expected to bring his profound understanding of Yoruba heritage to bear on questions surrounding the preservation of ancestral values, while Chief Dare Babarinsa will dissect the changing public image of Yoruba monarchs in the media age.

Chief Bode Mustapha will provide crucial insights from the standpoint of traditional chieftaincy, customary expectations, and the relationship between royal authority and the cultural values of the people.

WHY IT MATTERS

The tension between tradition and modernity is not peculiar to the Yoruba. Across the globe, traditional institutions are grappling with the implications of changing lifestyles, technology, and democratic values.

But in Yorubaland, where the Oba is historically intertwined with religious beliefs and ancestral practices, the stakes are higher. The danger is no longer just the desecration of a royal stool; it is the potential loss of a society’s collective memory.

Are we witnessing a legitimate process of cultural adaptation, or a gradual departure from practices that have historically defined our identity? Is the modernisation of the palace a necessary evolution, or a betrayal of the ancestors?

The crown is heavy, but in the age of social media, it is also fragile. A single viral video, an unconventional outfit, or a deviation from ancient protocol can spark a crisis of confidence in an institution that has held communities together for centuries.

On November 8, from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. West Africa Time, these questions will no longer be whispered in the shadows of the palace.

They will be broadcast live via Zoom on seven partner radio stations—including WASH 94.9FM Lagos, Sweet 107.1FM Abeokuta, and Kruzz 92.9FM Asaba—and NSTV on GOtv.

The debate will determine the future of the throne. And for a people whose history is etched into the beads and crowns of their kings, the answers could not be more consequential. Tradition is calling. Will the living answer?
