Sky Turns Dark, Streets Turn to Rivers: Powerful Storm Lashes Toronto, Cutting Power to Tens of Thousands

An “extremely dangerous” thunderstorm battered Canada’s largest city on Wednesday, bringing golf ball-sized hail, destructive winds, and more than 100 millimetres of rain.

The tempest flooded major highways, forced the closure of a major concert venue, and left over 65,000 customers in the dark as emergency crews scrambled to respond.

A City Brought to Its Knees

It started as a rumble on the horizon. Within hours, it became a full-blown assault.

The storm, which prompted Environment Canada to issue tornado watches and warnings across the Greater Toronto Area, brought the city of nearly three million people to a standstill.

Wind gusts exceeded 100 kilometres per hour in some communities, while rainfall accumulations ranged from 20 to more than 130 millimetres in a matter of hours.

A City in the Dark

At the height of the tempest, 65,000 Toronto Hydro customers were without power. By 8:00 p.m., that number had fallen to 45,000, but the scale of the damage was still immense.

“Safety remains our top priority as crews respond to reported hazards, including downed powerlines and damaged electrical equipment,” a Toronto Hydro spokesperson said.

The utility company warned that restoration efforts would take time, “given the scale of the storm” .

Beyond Toronto, the storm’s reach was staggering.

Hydro One reported more than 155,000 outages across southern parts of Ontario, affecting communities as far afield as Guelph, Woodstock, and Norfolk County.

Streets Become Rivers

The flooding was immediate and severe. The Don Valley Parkway, one of Toronto’s major arteries, was closed in both directions due to flooding.

Parts of Allen Road and the Gardiner Expressway were also shut down.

Toronto police reported rescuing motorists from submerged vehicles across the city. Images published by CBC showed cars nearly submerged in Vaughan, just north of Toronto.

The Michael Garron Hospital in Toronto’s East York community reported that its emergency department had been affected by flooding.

Events Cancelled, Venues Damaged

The storm also took a toll on the city’s cultural life. The Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), a beloved end-of-summer tradition, was forced to close its doors early due to severe weather.

“Due to ongoing severe weather conditions impacting the operation of the CNE and for the safety of our staff, partners, and guests, we will be closing the grounds at 7 p.m. and buildings at 8 p.m.,” officials announced.

At Rogers Stadium, a major concert venue, severe storms caused “significant” damage.

Performances by BRKN Love and Finger Eleven at the Bell Soundstage were cancelled.

The Toronto Transit Commission was also affected, with flooding and debris disrupting subway and bus services.

A City on Alert

Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow said the city’s emergency operations centre had been activated since Wednesday morning.

“City crews are already out responding to downed power wires, fallen trees, flooding and more,” Chow posted on X.

Dozens of flights at Toronto Pearson International Airport were delayed or cancelled.

By Wednesday evening, Environment Canada had lifted the orange warning for severe thunderstorms in the Greater Toronto Area, though a yellow alert remained in place for parts of southwestern Ontario.

As the city begins the long process of recovery, clearing debris, restoring power, and assessing the full extent of the damage, this storm serves as a stark reminder of the growing power of extreme weather events.
