Manchester City have finalized a staggering £125 million agreement with Chelsea to secure midfielder Enzo Fernandez on a dramatic transfer deadline day.
The deal equals the British transfer record set last summer when Liverpool splashed £125 million to bring Newcastle striker Alexander Isak to Anfield. For Fernandez, the move marks his second major British record transfer, having previously joined Chelsea from Benfica in 2023 for £107 million.
Negotiations accelerated rapidly over the past 24 hours between the Premier League rivals. The 25-year-old Argentina international is now scheduled to undergo a medical and finalize a long-term contract at the Etihad Stadium, with personal terms expected to be a formality.
The reunion brings Fernandez back under the management of Enzo Maresca, who previously worked with the midfielder during his tenure at Stamford Bridge. Maresca moved quickly to secure the signing after navigating a heavy exodus of midfield personnel during the current transfer window.
The acquisition shatters Manchester City’s club transfer record for the second time this summer, following the £116 million arrival of Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. Fernandez also becomes the fourth player to command a fee of £100 million or more in a single window, capping off an extraordinary period of spending across the Premier League.
