ASABA — The digital revolution has handed modern parents a powerful tool for connection, but a senior law enforcement officer in Delta State is warning that it is also arming the younger generation with instruments of self-destruction.

The alarming reality of unrestricted digital access came to light following a harrowing case handled by the Delta State Police Command on December 30, 2025. What began as a panicked late-night emergency call from a distressed mother revealed a much darker societal undercurrent: children trading innocence for unfiltered internet subcultures, unsupervised.

According to police accounts, the mother reached out to law enforcement after receiving chilling threats that intimate, nude photographs of her 16-year-old daughter were about to be leaked across public internet spaces.

Cyber investigators swiftly tracked the origin of the phone number used in the extortion attempt. The digital trail led them straight to a residence in Sapele, Warri. To the utter shock of investigators—and eventually, the perpetrator’s own family—the mastermind behind the cyber-extortion account was not a hardened criminal syndicate, but a 13-year-old boy.

When initially confronted by law enforcement, the minor attempted to deflect suspicion, claiming the mobile device belonged to his sister. However, digital forensic footprints quickly unraveled the narrative, forcing the boy to confess that he had personally engineered the correspondence and orchestrated the intimidation campaign against the older girl.

Probing deeper into how a teenager arrived at such predatory behavior, investigators uncovered a trail of unchecked digital exposure. The boy admitted to stumbling upon hardcore pornography at a tender age through unrestricted access to his father’s mobile device. Coupled with unmonitored social media accounts handed to him since he was roughly five years old, the child’s upbringing had essentially been outsourced to the algorithms of the internet.

The investigating officer expressed profound dismay over the near-total collapse of parental digital boundaries, raising a critical question for contemporary society: When children become perpetrators of digital violence driven by unchecked exposure, where does the ultimate accountability lie?

Child safety advocates and digital rights analysts note that this Delta State incident is far from an isolated anomaly. Across urban centers in Nigeria, smartphones have increasingly replaced traditional forms of child upbringing. Handing toddlers high-end internet-enabled devices to keep them quiet has quietly morphed into a systemic pipeline exposing minors to cyberbullying, online grooming, and explicit content long before they possess the cognitive maturity to process it.

As law enforcement continues to manage the fallout of the December 30 case, the warning from Delta serves as a sobering wake-up call. Without active parental intervention, strict digital boundaries, and open conversations about online safety, the devices meant to educate the current generation may well end up consuming them.
