The Nigeria Police Force has paraded four suspects, including two prominent nephrologists, over their alleged involvement in a lucrative human trafficking and kidney-harvesting syndicate operating across Nasarawa State and the Federal Capital Territory.
The suspects—identified as 23-year-old recruiter Emmanuel Ode, 25-year-old David Idoko, and medical doctors Benjamin Oyime (48) and Daniel Otukpa (53)—were apprehended during a sting operation conducted by operatives of the Special Tactical Squad in Auta Balifi, Karu Local Government Area. Dr. Oyime serves as a consultant nephrologist, while Dr. Otukpa is the Acting Director of Clinical Services at Wellington Hospital, Life Camp, Abuja.
According to the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, the syndicate preyed heavily on economically disadvantaged and uneducated young men, exploiting their financial desperation to secure dubious consent for organ removal. Investigators revealed that primary recruiter Emmanuel Ode confessed to targeting vulnerable youths under false pretenses.
Police detailed that on April 24, 2026, Ode allegedly lured a 22-year-old man, Samuel Ezekiel, to Wellington Hospital, where his kidney was harvested in exchange for a paltry sum of $1,250 (approximately ₦1.7 million). Another victim reportedly testified that he was lured by the same operative in 2022 and received ₦7 million after undergoing a similar procedure.
Authorities uncovered a sophisticated web of document forgery utilized by the network to bypass legal safeguards and cloak their illicit procedures. Investigators said the suspects routinely falsified victims’ names, National Identification Numbers (NIN), birth certificates, age declarations, affidavits, and formal consent letters.
Management of Wellington Clinic previously addressed the media, maintaining that the medical facility merely offered its platform for surgeries and had no prior knowledge of the fraudulent identity alterations or illegal schemes executed by the syndicate.
The police high command has assured that a wider manhunt is underway to track down remaining collaborators linked to the network, reiterating its zero-tolerance stance on human exploitation and illegal organ trading.
