In a stunning geopolitical and economic twist, Accra is preparing to turn the tables on West Africa’s energy landscape. Ghana has announced ambitious plans to export electricity directly to economic powerhouse Nigeria under a groundbreaking, first-of-its-kind “trade by barter” energy swap.
Unveiled by Ghana’s Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Dr. John Abdulai Jinapor, the high-stakes arrangement relies on a reciprocal loop: energy-rich Nigeria will funnel its abundant natural gas—backed by massive reserves totaling roughly 210.5 trillion cubic feet—through the transnational West African Gas Pipeline. Once the gas reaches Ghanaian shores, local thermal plants will convert it into high-voltage electricity, a portion of which will surge right back across the border to feed Nigeria’s grid.
Rather than exchanging heavy cash reserves, the two nations are pioneering a resource-for-power exchange that bypasses traditional currency constraints.
Charging Up West Africa
For Ghana, which already exports reliable power to neighbors like Togo, Benin, Burkina Faso, and Côte d’Ivoire via the Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo), adding Africa’s most populous nation to its roster marks the ultimate test of its regional ambitions. Industry analysts note that the bold strategy directly supports domestic goals, tying into broader frameworks like the national 24-Hour Economy initiative to keep local industries humming around the clock.
As negotiations progress, energy experts are watching closely to see how the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) manages the logistical feat. If successful, this audacious barter pact will not only solve critical fuel and power grid challenges for both countries, but it will firmly cement Ghana’s crown as the undisputed energy heartbeat of West Africa.
