​Born on January 19, 1946, in a modest one-room cabin in Pittman Center, Tennessee, Parton was the fourth of 12 children raised in what she famously described as “dirt poor” circumstances. Steeped in the rich musical traditions of the Smoky Mountains, she began singing in church at age six, taught herself guitar on a homemade instrument, and was performing live at the legendary Grand Ole Opry by age 13.

​Moving to Nashville the day after high school graduation in 1964, Parton quickly caught her big break in the late 1960s on The Porter Wagoner Show.
