KATSINA: Blood, bullets, and betrayal converged on a quiet Bakori village on Sunday, July 26, as a battalion of over 200 bandits, believed to be led by a long-hunted kingpin, marched into a trap laid by Nigeria’s secret police at around 5:40 pm, leaving dozens of the invaders, their commander included, dead before dusk.

The slain kingpin has been identified as Idi Abasu Aiki, a name that reportedly rang like an alarm bell across Katsina and Zamfara for years, tied by security sources to a trail of terror that stretched across both states’ porous borders. Security analyst Zagazola Makama, whose account has been corroborated by multiple security sources and widely reported by Nigerian outlets including Vanguard and Daily Post on August 2, put the final toll at more than 60 bandits killed, including Aiki and fourteen of his top commanders, a figure that marks one of the most consequential blows dealt to organised banditry in Nigeria’s restive Northwest in recent memory.

It is worth noting, in the interest of accuracy, that initial reports on the July 26 attack, including from The Cable and Leadership, cited a lower toll of over 40 bandits killed. The higher figure of 60 plus, including confirmation of Aiki’s death, emerged in later security briefings reported nearly a week after the incident. Readers should treat the final number as the more authoritative account, given its closer sourcing to the DSS-led operation.

A Reprisal Rooted in Recent Defeat

History, as ever, offered the first clue to what unfolded. On July 7, 2026, at Dawan Laila village in the same Bakori Local Government Area, local hunters and the Katsina State Community Watch Corps had inflicted heavy casualties on Aiki’s forces, a defeat the kingpin was said to be determined to avenge.

It is a pattern as old as conflict itself: the wounded beast returns not to heal, but to hunt. And hunt he did, assembling a coalition of over 200 armed men on motorcycles, reinforced by fighters from the Ado Aleru band of Zamfara, before setting his sights nineteen days later on Guga village, home to communities accused of aiding the Community Watch Corps that had humbled him before.

Walking Into the Web

What the bandits believed was a path to plunder proved instead a passage to their graves. Sources say the DSS and Community Watch Corps had long tracked the group’s movements, and as the marauders stormed Guga village in broad evening light, they marched, unknowingly, straight into an ambush.

By the time the gunfire settled, more than 60 lay dead, Aiki and fourteen of his commanders among them. It brings to mind W.B. Yeats’ warning that things fall apart when the centre cannot hold; for Aiki’s band, the centre did not merely fall apart, it was dismantled, deliberately and decisively, by men who had studied their every move.

The vigilante forces did not walk away unscathed. Four members of the Katsina hunters and vigilante corps reportedly lost their lives defending their communities, a cost security sources say underscores the price local defenders continue to pay in a region where the state’s presence is thin and the enemy’s cunning is thick.

Institutional Response and What It Signals

For a Northwest long weary of headlines announcing attacks rather than victories, the Guga village operation offers a rare reversal, a reminder that intelligence, when married to community cooperation, can turn the hunter into the hunted.

Security watchers note that the operation reflects a broader shift in strategy: state security agencies increasingly leaning on local vigilante knowledge of terrain and informant networks to pre-empt attacks rather than merely respond to them.

Whether this marks a turning tide against banditry in Katsina and Zamfara, or merely a temporary setback for a resilient criminal economy, remains to be seen, but for now, the score, if only briefly, favours the defenders.
