Stop Saying “Nigeria Has Happened to Me,” Dr. Bolajoko Admonishes Nigerians at Global Discourse

Dr. Bolajoko Bayo- Ajayi, President and Chairman of Council of the National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN), has issued a strong admonition to Nigerians to stop using the increasingly popular phrase, “Nigeria has happened to me.” She delivered this message on Sunday, July 26, 2026, while speaking as a Distinguished Discussant at the second edition of ValidViewNetwork Monthly Global Discourse, where she addressed the psychological and reputational damage caused by negative national expressions.

In her remarks, Dr. Bolajoko explained that the phrase “Nigeria has happened to me” has become a harmful shorthand for frustration, disappointment, or personal setbacks. It is often used when individuals encounter poor service delivery, bureaucratic delays, insecurity, or economic hardship. The expression is used when people lose money or properties due to sudden policy changes or any frustrating encounter that reinforces the belief that the system is stacked against them. According to her, while these experiences may be real, the expression itself is a form of self sabotage, reinforcing a narrative that Nigeria is inherently doomed and incapable of progress. She warned that such language gradually conditions citizens to expect failure, normalises pessimism, and contributes to the country’s growing culture of national demarketing.
