Trump Donns “2028” Cap, Jokes About Another Term at Press Gala

WASHINGTON — Delivering a freewheeling, insult-laden address at the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, President Donald Trump mixed sarcasm, jabs at the press, and political barbs before playfully announcing a tongue-in-cheek bid for a “fourth term” in office.

The high-profile, black-tie gala took place at the Waldorf Astoria on Friday night, arriving three months after the original April event was abruptly cut short due to a security breach and shooting incident at the Washington Hilton. With tighter security protocols in place, the evening served as both a celebration of journalism and a surreal platform for the president, who attended the traditional dinner for the first time.

Taking the podium for an hour-long speech, Trump oscillated between lighthearted remarks and sharp critiques of political foes and media organizations. Early in his address, he teased the audience about his longevity in executive office, stating, “Just like my presidency, the second time is always better. It’s always better, and the third time will be better yet”.

The moment culminated near the end of his speech when he donned a red “Trump 2028” cap. “I’m pleased to announce my intention to, and this is somewhat of a scoop, my intention to run for a fourth term as president of the United States,” he quipped to the crowd, adding, “I won three times, and now I’m going to do it again”—alluding to his persistent, unfounded claims regarding the 2020 election alongside his official 2016 and 2024 victories.

While the remarks drew chuckles and groans alike from the ballroom of journalists and officials, they also underscored ongoing tensions surrounding executive term limits set by the 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. Trump later acknowledged he was joking, but the spectacle capped off an evening marked by trademark defiance and sharp wit.

The event also honored the security personnel and staff who intervened during the April attempt, including Secret Service Officer Victor Gonzales, drawing bipartisan applause for resilience in the face of political violence.
