BALTIMORE — A community is grappling with the devastating realities of teen dating violence following the arrest of a 16-year-old boy charged with the fatal shooting of his 15-year-old girlfriend and her nine-year-old brother.
Keith Maurice James Jr. faces two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the July 7 incident that claimed the lives of Giovanna Myrie and her younger brother, Steve Allen.
Investigators revealed that the tragedy was preceded by chilling threats. Days before the shooting, Myrie confided in a close friend, sharing alarming text messages in which James allegedly threatened lethal violence if she engaged with other individuals. A witness also reported seeing James brandishing a firearm during a FaceTime call on July 4.
According to Baltimore County law enforcement, digital forensics and neighborhood surveillance footage placed the suspect near the victims’ residence around 4:20 p.m. on the day of the attack. The victims’ mother discovered the children dead from multiple gunshot wounds roughly three hours later.
Baltimore County Police Chief Robert McCullough categorized the younger sibling as an innocent bystander, while emphasizing the broader societal crisis of adolescent violence and abusive dynamics in young relationships.
While James acknowledged his two-month relationship with Myrie, he disputed being at the residence past July 4. Following his arrest, the suspect appeared in court, where defense counsel waived a bond hearing as the judicial process moves forward.
