Teacher Surrenders After Flogging Student to Death in Anambra

​ADAZI-ANI — The Anambra State Police Command has taken into custody Mrs. Dim Ebere, a 47-year-old teacher who had been the subject of an intensive manhunt following the tragic death of a 12-year-old student under her care.

​The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the Adazi-Ani community in the Anaocha Local Government Area, came to light on the evening of July 16, 2026. Authorities received a distress report alleging that the student had been subjected to severe corporal punishment, leading to fatal injuries.

​Upon receiving the report, police operatives from the Neni Divisional Headquarters were dispatched to the school. The victim was immediately rushed to a local hospital for emergency medical attention, but was pronounced dead by attending physicians. Preliminary examinations of the body revealed harrowing evidence of the assault, with multiple visible marks of violence recorded across the victim’s remains. The body has since been deposited at the hospital morgue to await an autopsy.

​Following the incident, Mrs. Ebere initially went into hiding, prompting the state police to launch a coordinated search operation. The manhunt was spearheaded by the Command’s Safe School Protection Squad, working in close coordination with Neni divisional officers and local community leaders.

​Facing mounting pressure from law enforcement and community stakeholders, Mrs. Ebere voluntarily turned herself in at the Neni Police Station.

​SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Command, confirmed the development in a statement issued on July 18, 2026. He noted that the suspect is currently in police custody and is slated for transfer to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Awka, where formal charges and the conclusion of the investigation will be processed.

​The Command expressed its gratitude to the traditional institution and residents of Adazi-Ani for their cooperation, which proved instrumental in the suspect’s surrender.

​”The family of the deceased and members of the public are assured that the Command remains committed to ensuring that justice is served,” Ikenga stated.

​He further appealed for calm, urging citizens to refrain from vigilantism and to continue providing any information that may assist the ongoing investigation. The case remains a focal point for the Command as they continue their efforts to ensure safety within the state’s educational institutions.
