In a watershed moment for the Nigerian legal profession, Mrs. Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, has been elected as the 33rd President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA). Her victory marks a historic milestone, making her only the second woman to ascend to the presidency of the association since its inception in 1933.
The election, which concluded amidst high anticipation, saw Mrs. Badejo-Okusanya emerge victorious following a spirited contest. Known for her extensive experience in high-stakes litigation, commercial arbitration, and her previous pivotal roles within the association—most notably as the Chairperson of the 2024 Annual General Conference Planning Committee—her leadership is widely viewed as a continuation of her long-standing commitment to professional excellence and legal reform.
A Mandate for Change
In her acceptance message, titled “A Bold Message of Gratitude,” the President-Elect expressed deep humility and a profound sense of responsibility. She framed her victory not as a personal triumph, but as a collective success for those who championed her campaign vision: “A Bolder Bar That Works for Everyone.”
”The campaign is over. The work begins now,” she stated, emphasizing her commitment to a tenure defined by integrity, accountability, and courage. She articulated a clear roadmap for her administration, focusing on enhancing the welfare and practice standards of legal practitioners across the country. Her goal, as she pledged to the electorate, is to foster an environment where lawyers can “earn better, live better, and practise better.”
Looking Toward the Future
Mrs. Badejo-Okusanya, a Partner at Africa Law Practice NG & Co and a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (UK), brings a wealth of experience from both the private and public sectors. Her previous contributions to justice sector reforms and her reputation as a trailblazer in silk have earned her widespread support across the bar.
As she prepares to assume the mantle of leadership, the legal community looks toward her administration to navigate the complexities of the modern legal landscape and to strengthen the NBA’s role as a watchdog for society and a promoter of the rule of law.
