SYDNEY — Sir Sam Neill, the acclaimed New Zealand actor whose versatile career spanned five decades and included iconic roles in Jurassic Park and The Piano, has died at the age of 78.

His family announced the news on Monday, July 13, 2026, stating that the actor passed away in Sydney, Australia. The statement, released via the actor’s social media, described his death as “sudden and unexpected”.

“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life,” the family wrote. “The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free”.

The actor had been publicly battling stage-three angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma, a rare and aggressive blood cancer, since 2023. After a grueling treatment process that included experimental therapies, Neill shared the encouraging news earlier this year that he was cancer-free, having successfully pushed the disease into remission.

Born Nigel John Dermot Neill on September 14, 1947, in Omagh, Northern Ireland, he moved to New Zealand with his family at age seven. After establishing himself in the New Zealand and Australian film industries with roles in Sleeping Dogs (1977) and My Brilliant Career (1979), Neill became a globally recognized leading man.

His performance as the calm, quick-thinking paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park cemented his status as an international star. He would go on to reprise the role in subsequent entries of the franchise.

Neill’s filmography was noted for its remarkable range, moving seamlessly between mainstream hits and challenging independent cinema. Notable credits include the intense thriller Dead Calm, the Jane Campion drama The Piano, the sci-fi horror Event Horizon, and the chilling Omen III: The Final Conflict. On television, he earned widespread praise for his role as Inspector Chester Campbell in the hit series Peaky Blinders and for his portrayal of the title character in the 1998 miniseries Merlin.

Tributes have poured in from political and industry leaders. New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon hailed Neill as “one of the greats,” noting that he was instrumental in transforming the nation’s film industry into a world-class cultural exporter. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese reflected on Neill’s place in the hearts of Australians, describing him as “wry and dry, thoughtful and laconic”.

The family expressed their deep gratitude to the medical staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Sydney for their care. While they have requested privacy as they process the loss, they indicated that further details regarding a memorial or public service would be shared at a later date.
