Senator Lindsey Graham Dies at 71 Following Aortic Dissection

WASHINGTON — U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham, a pivotal and polarizing figure in American politics who served over three decades in Congress, passed away Saturday evening at his Capitol Hill home. He was 71.

The District of Columbia medical examiner’s office released preliminary findings Sunday confirming that the South Carolina Republican died of an aortic dissection caused by arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease. An aortic dissection is a life-threatening medical emergency involving a tear in the inner lining of the body’s primary artery, often associated with the hardening of arteries.

The senator’s office noted that the official death certificate remains pending, awaiting the finalization of standard toxicological and microscopic testing in the coming weeks.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to Graham’s residence at approximately 8:30 p.m. Saturday following reports of an individual suffering from severe chest pains. Despite immediate efforts by first responders to perform CPR, the veteran lawmaker was pronounced dead upon arrival at George Washington University Hospital.

His sudden passing occurred just days after he returned from a high-profile diplomatic mission to Kyiv, Ukraine, where he met with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Hours before his death, Graham had spoken by telephone with President Donald Trump, who described the call as a brief check-in during which the senator sounded “a little tired” but otherwise fine.

”Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead!” President Trump wrote in a tribute on Truth Social. “He was always working, and was a true American Patriot”.

Graham’s death leaves a vacancy in the Senate, where Republicans held a 53-47 majority. Under South Carolina law, Governor Henry McMaster is authorized to appoint an interim successor to serve until January 3, 2027. As Graham was already running for reelection this year, a permanent successor will be chosen by voters in the November 3 midterm elections.

A career characterized by his roles on the Senate Judiciary and Armed Services committees, Graham was a staunch advocate for a robust military presence abroad and a key strategist for the current administration. His political journey—marked by his evolution from a vocal 2016 primary critic of Donald Trump to one of the President’s most trusted confidants—remains a defining chapter of modern Republican politics.

Condolences poured in from both sides of the aisle, with lawmakers reflecting on his capacity for cross-party cooperation and his unwavering commitment to national defense. As the nation mourns, flags at federal buildings nationwide have been ordered to fly at half-mast in his honor.
