FAR ROCKAWAY, Queens — A quiet Far Rockaway community is reeling after a 26-year-old man allegedly murdered his mother, a retired city corrections officer, in a gruesome attack that ended with a desperate flight into the ocean.
Armel Crawford was arraigned on Wednesday, July 8, on charges of second-degree murder and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He is accused of killing his mother, 61-year-old Joanne Crawford, inside their shared home on Nameoke Avenue on the morning of Tuesday, July 7.
Queens Assistant District Attorney Lindsey Ruzza detailed the harrowing nature of the crime during the arraignment, stating that the victim sustained 11 stab wounds. According to prosecutors, the violence was extreme; one abdominal wound pierced through the liver and the entire body, and a blade was forced down the victim’s throat, causing severe internal trauma.

Police discovered the scene at approximately 10:40 a.m. Tuesday after responding to the residence. While the suspect was initially at large, he was apprehended shortly thereafter at the Beach 62nd Street boardwalk. According to authorities, Crawford ran into the surf in an apparent attempt to evade capture—or, as one law enforcement source speculated, potentially to take his own life.
The tragedy has left neighbors and relatives in a state of profound shock. Joanne Crawford was a well-known fixture in the neighborhood, described by loved ones as a generous and dedicated woman.

The relationship between mother and son had been marked by long-standing tension. Relatives suggested the strain stemmed from Joanne’s demanding career as a city corrections officer, which her son allegedly felt deprived him of the quality time and maternal attention he desired. While police had been called to the home for domestic disturbances twice earlier this year, those incidents had not escalated to physical violence prior to Tuesday’s fatal confrontation.
“We’re all just trying to process what happened,” one neighbor said, noting that they had watched Armel grow up in the house. “I still can’t believe this is real.”
