The Oyo State Government has intensified security measures in Ibadan’s Ojoo area following a violent clash that resulted in multiple fatalities and left several others injured. The unrest, which disrupted commercial activity in the Akinyele Local Government Area, has prompted high-level government intervention and calls for communal peace.
The violence erupted between Tuesday night and Wednesday morning, reportedly triggered by a dispute over a failed Point-of-Sale (POS) transaction. According to eyewitness accounts, a commercial tricycle rider had withdrawn cash from a POS operator; however, a network failure led to a disagreement over whether the transaction had been completed.
The situation escalated rapidly when the tricycle rider was allegedly stabbed to death. This incident fueled deep-seated anger among the victim’s colleagues and associates, leading to a violent confrontation that resulted in further loss of life and property damage. Reports indicate that businesses, including the popular Ojoo Motor Park, were forced to shut down as residents fled the area.
Government and Royal Intervention
Oyo State Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal, conducted an on-the-spot assessment of the community on Wednesday. Speaking on behalf of Governor Seyi Makinde, Lawal condemned the violence, attributing the unrest to “criminal elements” rather than ethnic tension.
”Criminals are simply criminals, and criminality has no tribal identity,” Lawal stated, emphasizing the government’s commitment to restoring order. He assured the public that security agencies have been directed to identify, apprehend, and prosecute those responsible for the violence.
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, also issued an urgent appeal for calm. In a statement released through his media aide, the monarch urged residents to eschew violence and preserve the city’s long-standing tradition of peaceful coexistence. He reminded the community that disagreements are a part of human life but must not be allowed to degenerate into communal or ethnic conflicts.
Current Status
Security personnel, including operatives from the Nigeria Police Force and the specialized “Operation Burst” security outfit, were deployed to strategic locations across Ojoo to maintain order. While initial reports on the exact death toll varied—with some sources citing two confirmed fatalities and others reporting up to four—official channels and security spokespersons have confirmed that the situation has been brought under control and is currently calm.
Authorities continue to urge residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies rather than taking the law into their own hands.
