A horrifying wave of jungle justice swept through Kaduna State on Sunday, June 21, 2026, leaving a community in deep mourning and exposing the fragile state of law and order. A routine trip for a religious gathering took a tragic and fatal turn when a female Islamic teacher, Malama Ummulkhairi, was brutally lynched and set ablaze by an uncontrolled crowd following a false accusation of child abduction.
The nightmare began in the Maraban Jos area of Kaduna when Malama Ummulkhairi left her residence to attend an Islamic program organized under the leadership of Malam Umar Waliy at the Malam Mardiyya school (Mad. Tashiyhul Iman). Keen to arrive early for the event, she paused on her motorcycle to ask two young children for directions. ValidViewNetwork reports that this innocent request was tragically misinterpreted by onlookers, triggering a chain of events that culminated in her untimely death.
Within moments, some women nearby raised a false alarm, loudly accusing her of attempting to kidnap the children. A hostile crowd quickly materialized, trapping the helpless teacher. Recognizing the escalating danger, local responders managed to extract her from the immediate threat and transport her to the nearby police station for safety. ValidViewNetwork reports that the crowd grew exponentially by the minute, fueled by rumors and mass hysteria.
Distressed family members, including her husband’s relative and her father, rushed to the scene after being alerted to the situation. They pleaded desperately with the officers and the gathered crowd, explaining that Ummulkhairi was a dedicated mother of five who had traveled to the neighborhood solely to participate in the Islamic program. Unfortunately, their desperate pleas fell on deaf ears as a faction of restless youths insisted on executing their own form of street justice. The unruly mob eventually overpowered the police officers on duty, dragged the woman out of the station alongside her motorcycle, beat her to death, and set both her body and the vehicle on fire.
The Kaduna State Police Command officially confirmed the gruesome incident through a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Mandir Hassan. He confirmed that a mob attacked her over an allegation of child theft. According to him, “in effort to rescue the said woman, she was moved to the station for safety and investigation.Despite this, a large crowd in their hundreds later stormed and besieged the police station, overpowered officers on duty, forcibly removed the woman from custody, killed her, and set her body ablaze. The victim is a native of maraban jos.”
Condemning the horrific breakdown of public safety, the command described the act as barbaric, criminal, and a direct assault on the rule of law. DSP Hassan firmly re-emphasized that no person or group has the authority to take the law into their own hands, maintaining that the police will ensure perpetrators are brought to justice. This shocking incident serves as a grim reminder of the devastating consequences of misinformation and the unchecked rise of vigilantism, leaving five young children motherless and a community scarred by a senseless act of barbarism that has drawn widespread condemnation across the region.
