LIVERPOOL, England — Liverpool Football Club are set to open formal negotiations with former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola to take over as the club’s new head coach. The rapid move comes less than 48 hours after Fenway Sports Group (FSG) ruthlessly dismissed Arne Slot on Saturday following a turbulent, fifth-place Premier League campaign.
The 43-year-old Spaniard has emerged as the clear frontrunner to succeed Slot, who was axed just one year after leading Liverpool to their historic 20th English league title.
FSG’s Search for High-Intensity Football
The Anfield hierarchy reportedly reached an internal consensus to pivot toward a more aggressive, high-intensity, and proactive tactical blueprint. This desire for “heavy metal” football directly mirrors Iraola’s philosophy, which relies heavily on high pressing and rapid verticality.
Crucially, the pursuit is championed by Liverpool’s Sporting Director, Richard Hughes. Hughes possesses a close professional relationship with Iraola, having been the technical director who brought the Basque coach to Bournemouth in 2023.
While the club has kept a watchful eye on alternative options—including Stuttgart’s Sebastian Hoeness and Lens boss Pierre Sage—Iraola is widely expected to be offered the Anfield hot seat in the coming days.
The Downfall of Arne Slot
Slot’s sudden departure marks a stunning fall from grace. Arriving in 2024 as Jürgen Klopp’s successor, the Dutchman achieved immediate legendary status by reclaiming the Premier League crown in his debut season. However, his second year in charge unraveled amid immense adversity, off-pitch friction, and tactical regression.
Despite securing UEFA Champions League football on the final day of the season, Liverpool endured a grueling campaign. They suffered 19 defeats across all competitions and finished with a mere 60 points—their lowest league tally since the 2015–16 season, leaving them a massive 25 points adrift of champions Arsenal.
The season was also heavily clouded by immense emotional strain following the tragic death of forward Diogo Jota, alongside highly publicised dressing-room tension, notably featuring a fractured relationship with Mohamed Salah before the forward’s exit.
In an official club statement, FSG acknowledged the difficult nature of the decision but noted:
”We have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward… the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction.”
Iraola’s Rising Stock
Iraola is currently one of Europe’s most coveted managerial properties after announcing in April that he would leave Bournemouth at the expiration of his contract.

During his tenure on the south coast, he guided the Cherries to a historic sixth-place finish in the 2025–26 season, securing the club’s first-ever qualification for the UEFA Europa League. Bournemouth finished the season just three points behind Liverpool, highlighted by giant-killing victories over Manchester City and Arsenal.
The former Athletic Bilbao and Spain right-back, who previously managed AEK Larnaca, Mirandés, and Rayo Vallecano, has already attracted firm interest from AC Milan, Bayer Leverkusen, and Crystal Palace. However, the allure of Anfield and a reunion with Richard Hughes look set to fast-track his arrival on Merseyside as Liverpool eager to finalize the appointment before pre-season preparations commence.
